Black Moonstone is a variety of moonstone that was recently discovered in Madagascar. It can be seen containing white, grey, peach, and silver colors running throughout almost every piece. Black Moonstone is highly prized for its properties such as its black essence, silvery-green sheen and peach veins. Although Black Moonstone is called black, this is not the case when considering it through its physical appearance. Black moonstone will appear to be black initially, especially in dim lighting situations. But when exposed to light and the reflection of light, it will take on a beautiful silvery shimmer, and the adularescenct flash will appear. Black Moonstone is very rare due to how it comes into being and where you can find it. Black Moonstone is the rarest of all moonstones. Black Moonstone is a gorgeous silky smooth stone with a velvety silver flash which plays across its surface when moved about in the light. Its color ranges from a dark slate grey to lighter shades of grey and sometimes reflects a red undertone. This dark color of Moonstone is a very unusual find.

The name "moonstone" is derived from this visual effect, or sheen, known as "Adularescence" or "Schiller Effect", caused by light diffraction within its crystalline structure. Moonstone is composed of two feldspar species, Orthoclase and Albite. The two species are intermingled during formation. As the newly formed mineral cools, the intergrowth of Orthoclase and Albite separates into stacked, alternating layers. When light falls between these thin, flat layers, it scatters in many directions producing the phenomenon called “Adularescence” or “Chatoyancy”. There are various shades of moonstone from the milky white, grey, peach, and less often, black. True Black Moonstone is somewhat more rare and can be found only in India and Madagascar. This is because Madagascar and India used to be connected before the tectonic plates separated to their current location. They share several of the same mineral resources for this reason.
